About MFNP
Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP), the largest and most-visited national park in Uganda was established in 1952. It is located in the Northwest of Uganda and a home-based to the popularly known most powerful falls in the world called Murchison falls from which it derives the name. The fall is formed as River Nile waters congestion through a seven meters narrow gorge in the rocks, plummeting over 40 meters beneath into a 50 meters radius water pool. It emits large volumes of water about 300 cubic meters per second at a very powerful pressure that cause the surrounding to tremble.MFNP is a home to more than 73 animals species among which are four the ‘Big Five’- buffaloes, leopards, lions and elephants (except rhinos), has three-quarters of the world’s population of Rothschild giraffes plus a healthy population of herbivores including the Uganda Kobs. There are various primates living within its verdant forests like the Budongo among are over 610 chimpanzees, in addition to 451 bird species including 23 Albertine rift endemics. The first European explorers to come to Uganda John Speke and James Grant made the first visit to Murchison Falls in 1862. Subsequent voyagers Samuel and Florence Baker in 1863–4, named the falls Murchison Falls in memory of the Geologist Roderick Murchison, then the president of the Royal Geographical Society.Expect a detour visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, game drive and launch trip to the bottom of the falls. Thereafter, transfer to Kibale National Park for the chimp trekking experience.
